A helpful list of tips to ensure your home is secure while you’re on vacation

It’s difficult to fully relax on vacation while worrying about your home and its valuables. It’s a good idea to walk through a few home security steps before leaving on vacation. These tips will provide you with peace of mind and make it easier to enjoy your trip without stressing about break-ins.

1. Install a Security Camera System

Nowadays, it’s easier than ever to install security cameras that cover the exterior and interior of your home. We recommend security cameras that have additional features like motion detection notifications sent directly to your phone. Many cameras allow you to view the stream from outside the local area network, making it easier for you to check on your home.

Additionally, installing security signs around your property that clearly state the property is under surveillance is an excellent deterrent. In the off-chance that someone does break into your home, clear video footage will help the authorities track them down.

2. Reinforce Doors with Deadbolts

When a burglar targets your home, they usually start by trying to brute force their way into your front door. One easy way to secure your door against brute force attacks is by installing a thick deadbolt that sits deep within the door frame.

Deadbolts have protected our clients from many break-in attempts. It should keep your door firmly in place until the attacker gives up and looks for an easier target.

3. Utilize Alarm Switches

Most modern homes have alarm switches installed at every possible point of entry. It’s good to review the alarm switches and make sure they’re fully functional before you leave. For instance, replace the batteries with fresh ones and test the system to ensure it works as intended.

It also doesn’t hurt to place alarm signs around your property or on your windows. If an intruder manages to gain access to your home, a deafening alarm should keep them out.

4. Use Smart Lights

Burglars are more likely to avoid homes that are occupied. Using smart lights is the best way to make it seem like someone is home. Smart lights can be controlled remotely or configured to follow a schedule. It’s also possible to link smart lights to smart home devices like Alexa or Google Nest. Smart lights can be used in combination with smart plugs to turn on appliances such as TVs.

With smart lights and the previously mentioned security tips, burglars will not attempt to break into your home because it’s not worth the hassle. Most burglars are looking for easy targets.
